The Big 150
Andie is a 10-year-old girl with a big personality and a smile that will light up the room. She is witty, funny and animated. When you meet her, you have no idea the challenges she endures every single day because of a disease called Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA). On January 9, 2018, Andie underwent her 150th blood transfusion at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. Children’s Health Foundation was there to celebrate her strength and resilience by throwing a surprise party in her honour.
Many of Andie’s favourite hospital friends joined her special day, including Dr. Beary Goode, her Child Life Specialist, Melissa, and her physician, Dr. Jardine.
When Andie was a baby, she was diagnosed with DBA, a condition which causes her bone marrow to not make enough red blood cells. Every three weeks, Andie visits Children’s Hospital for a blood transfusion. Every night, she receives an injection to help regulate her iron levels. Although she will need many more blood transfusions in her lifetime, this young girl puts on a brave face, and that is something to celebrate!
