Creating Comfort with Books, Blankets and Bears

Children's Hospital patient Keanna with the donated care packagesWhen a child is in the hospital, it can be a difficult and lengthy experience; sometimes they just need a bit of comfort to keep their spirits up. On February 24, to mark the 120th Anniversary of the Women’s Institute of Ontario, the Southern Area Women’s Institute donated care packages to kids at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. Each cozy care package contained a teddy bear, handmade blanket and a storybook.

Ten-year-old Children’s Hospital patient Keanna has spent a lot of time in hospital due to a rare kidney disease. At one point, she was spending six days a week at the hospital for dialysis treatment. Keanna knows firsthand how important gifts like these are to brightening kids’ days.

“It is so nice of all of you to think of us kids. Thank you for donating to the hospital. The special things you brought today will bring smiles to kids’ faces!”

In addition to the care packages, the Southern Area Women’s Institute brought a donation of $2,250 to purchase a High Flow Humidity System. This important piece of equipment provides children with much-needed oxygen in a non-invasive way, giving parents comfort that their child is getting the breathing support they need to avoid further complications.

Thank you to the Women’s Institute for your gift to Children’s Health Foundation. Your generosity brings comfort and warmth to children and their families in their time of need.
