Insurance for a Healthier Future
Ed and Ruth Stevens want to be remembered for their lifelong interest in helping children. This passion is exemplified by their dedicated volunteerism with the Optimist Club of East Williams and their personal philanthropy with Children’s Health Foundation. They have made several gifts to benefit critically ill and injured children at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. With their caring hearts, they made the meaningful decision to leave a legacy to Children’s Health Foundation that lives beyond their years.
The Stevens felt that their preferred method for this legacy was to open a permanent life insurance plan in Ruth’s name, and make Children’s Health Foundation the owner of the policy. For the Stevens, this means that they pay a monthly premium and in turn, receive a charitable receipt for the full amount paid for these premiums each year. Upon Ruth’s death, it is their intent that Children’s Health Foundation will receive the full amount of the policy to support kids in our region. They feel that the real benefit is that the relatively small amount of money they pay for premiums now becomes a larger donation after life to support this important work.
“The hospital isn’t going to benefit tomorrow, the next day or the day after, but it is going to help future generations of kids. Our legacy will support the hospital, the equipment it needs and the research necessary for discoveries to treat illnesses,” explains Ed. “We are here for a short time, but we are going to continue to be here in spite of our passing.”
When looking to leave a legacy through life insurance it is not necessary to apply for a new policy. If you already own a permanent policy you can change the ownership to a registered charity, like Children’s Health Foundation.
“By choosing a life insurance policy, we don’t need to worry about the money coming out of our estate – which may not be there through life’s uncertainties. It was easy to choose to leave our legacy this way because when you see the amount that it will pay out, you realize that the impact you can make is big,” shares Ruth.
