A Miracle Just in Time for the Holidays

Christmas Eve 2012 was a special day for Nicole. It was on this day that she was able to hold her daughter Lexi for the first time, 24 days after giving birth. She couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas gift.

Lexi was born three months early by emergency C-section when Nicole developed severe complications. Both of their lives were at risk. Born weighing a mere 1lb 1.8 oz., Lexi was whisked off to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre, leaving Nicole to recover alone. “Being in the Mother/Baby Care Unit without my baby was torture,” she recalls.

It was a long journey for little Lexi. She spent 109 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), battling numerous complications. Within the first seven minutes of her life she was intubated. Chronic lung disease, broncopulmonary dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect, stage two retinopathy of prematurity in her eyes, hypertension, anemia and feeding issues – this long list showcases some of the challenges she faced.

Lexi survived thanks to the specialized equipment that is made specially for infants of her size. The Giraffe OmniBed kept her warm and safe, mimicking her mother’s womb. A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine helped her breathe when she couldn’t on her own. Thankfully, this state-of-the-art equipment was there to help her thrive.

Lexi is now five years old and is a healthy, happy little girl, thanks to her fighting willpower, the incredible staff at Children’s Hospital, and the donor-funded equipment that was available when she needed it.

You can help provide Children’s Hospital with the NICU equipment they need by supporting LCBO’s Giving Back In Our Community campaign. For the month of December, customers are invited to add a $2, $5 or $10 donation to their purchases or add a donation to the boxes at checkout counters.

In addition to purchasing essential NICU equipment, the campaign will also fund the Regional Injury Prevention Program at Children’s Hospital to keep children and youth safe.

Give more families the best gift this holiday season. Show your support when you visit the LCBO by making a donation to benefit our region’s kids!
