As Small as a Blizzard Treat

Coming into the world three months early by emergency C-section, baby Zoe weighed only 1 lb 4 oz – the same size as a large Dairy Queen Blizzard! Her mom, Paula, puts into perspective just how small this really is: “Zoe’s whole hand, including her fingers, was smaller than the tip of my thumb. It was just incredible how little she was.”

Being born early without the chance to develop optimally in her mother’s womb, Zoe navigated many challenges as she began the first chapter of her life. After having surgery to remove part of her intestine, Zoe’s family was told that she had a 50 per cent chance of surviving. With a great deal of love and support, Zoe pulled through, and after three additional procedures she came off of her respirator and was able to breathe by herself for the first time.

It was a long road – nearly four months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – but with specialized health care from her team at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre, Zoe grew strong enough to go home. She continued to be monitored by the Developmental Follow-up Clinic for the next few years to ensure she was on track with her peers and growing healthy and strong.

Today, Zoe is a happy, energetic five-year-old girl who loves playing, singing, dancing and enjoying M&M Blizzards! Speaking of Blizzards, Zoe is excited to be a part of this year’s Miracle Treat Day on August 11. She will be mixing up Blizzards at her local Dairy Queen for generous customers. Proceeds from Blizzards sold at participating Dairy Queen locations across Southwestern Ontario and parts of Northern Ontario on Miracle Treat Day will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network, benefitting kids at our Children’s Hospital.
