Expert Care Saved Baby Maia’s Life

Being born two months premature, weighing just under four pounds, is hard enough, but Maia was also born with two holes in her heart.

Maia’s care team at Children’s Hospital monitored her closely — Maia’s mom, Kim, credits their expertise with saving her daughter’s life by finding a potentially fatal condition.

At just seven months old, Maia needed open heart surgery.

She turns 20 in May.

The surgery was a complete success, but Maia still needed regular visits to Children’s Hospital, continuing the close monitoring that saved her life. The state-of-the-art equipment in the CP Healthy Hearts Lab played a crucial role in Maia’s care, allowing her team to perform vital tests and track her heart as she grew.

At Children’s Hospital, expert care came with kindness, too. In her 17 years of regular visits, Maia says that she never had a bad experience in the Paediatric Cardiology Unit.

“Children’s Hospital takes care of you in a way where it does not even feel like you are their patient,” says Maia. “They really make you feel like you are their family and that they do truly care about you.”
