Joey’s Journey: From Childhood Courage to a Bright, Creative Future

Joey's Story: How Hope Lives Across the Years

For many people in our community, Joey’s story is one they remember well.

In 2019, Children’s Health Foundation first shared his journey — a story of a young boy facing an unexpected diagnosis, the loss of his mother, and a long treatment road ahead. His courage, his dad Scott’s love, and the compassion surrounding their family touched hearts across Western Ontario.

Today, we’re honoured to share how Joey is doing now.

Joey’s Early Journey

Joey was only four years old when he was diagnosed with leukemia. Just a month later, his family suffered the unimaginable loss of his mother. Overnight, Joey and his dad were navigating grief, uncertainty, and the reality of a life-threatening diagnosis

Inside Children’s Hospital, they found more than medical care, they found a second family.

Child Life Specialists created space for Joey to play, explore, and express himself. Art Therapy helped him discover a new love for creating. Nurses and physicians surrounded him with reassurance, routine, and warmth on days that felt overwhelming.

Faith, family, community, and compassionate care held them together.

Joey Today

A lot has changed since that video was filmed.

Today, Joey is 16 years old, cancer-free, and thriving.

His love of art has grown into a passion for photography and video editing, a creative path that brings him joy and confidence. He’s active, hopeful, and surrounded by a family filled with strength and gratitude.

His dad Scott says that while Joey barely remembers much of his treatment, those experiences left a lasting imprint on their family — one of resilience, of compassion, and of the many people who helped light their way.

Why Joey’s Story Matters

Stories like Joey’s show what happens when medical expertise meets comfort, creativity, and community support.

Programs that helped Joey — Child Life, Art Therapy, family supports-are not funded by government sources. They exist because kindness exists, because donors believe that even on the hardest days, kids deserve a chance to just be kids.

Joey’s childhood was shaped by those moments of normalcy, colour, and hope.

And today, his future is shaped by them too.

Hope Lives Here — Every Day

Joey’s journey is a reminder of the heart of Children’s Hospital:
compassion, innovation, and a commitment to making every moment of care matter.

And as he continues to grow, create, and explore who he is, Joey carries with him the care, kindness, and community that helped him through his earliest and hardest days.

Give More Children the Chance to Just Be Kids

Joey’s journey — from fear and grief to creativity, strength, and a thriving future, shows how deeply donor-funded programs can shape a child’s recovery and their life beyond hospital walls.

Child Life, Art Therapy, comfort programs, and family support continue because our community believes every child deserves joy, stability, and hope.

You can help more families find that same light in their darkest moments.

Your kindness makes healing possible, and hope live here every day.
