Grateful Mother Shares the Story of Her Son, Brandyn

On a cold, blustery morning in February 1993, a beautiful baby boy was born at Children’s Hospital in London, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC). Brandyn had been diagnosed with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus before his birth and was referred to Children’s Hospital to welcome him into this world and address his medical concerns in a world-class medical facility.

On the first day following his birth, Brandyn underwent the first of 35 surgeries within the walls of Children’s Hospital. All of these surgeries were to prolong, save, or simply make life a little easier to manage. We spent so much time there that it almost started to feel like home.

Brandyn always received the best care from every talented and professional staff member. They all took such great pride in providing not just the necessary care to the child, but to their families who were struggling to cope on this roller coaster of a life we were now traveling.

Laurie Harmer donated $10,000 to Children’s Health Foundation and has pledged to support the foundation in her Will.

Brandyn’s life expectancy was estimated at the age of eight based on all his medical complications, but boy did he prove them wrong on so many occasions. The care he received, and his never-ending will to live, granted him so many days of enjoying the things he loved. These things included fishing with his wonderful grandpa, attending concerts and sporting events, and even traveling a small part of this vast world.

Sadly, Brandyn passed away at his home on April 8, 2024, where he was loved and cared for. Now he runs free, with no limitations holding him down.

A heartfelt thank you to Children’s Health Foundation and Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and its amazing staff for the many caring and compassionate people who dedicated themselves to providing Brandyn the best possible life. This was quite an accomplishment making it to 31 years!

This mom will be forever grateful, as I believe if it wasn’t for Children’s Hospital and its staff, I wouldn’t have had the privilege and honor to be this young man’s mom for 31 wonderful years.
