Full Circle: Returning Home to Enhance Paediatric Critical Care

Meet Dr. Paige Burgess

From the small town of Harriston, Ontario, Dr. Paige Burgess feels privileged to be working in the very place that saved her sister’s life after she was diagnosed with kidney cancer: Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).

“It feels like a full circle moment,” said Dr. Burgess, noting she has spent the past seven years living and training in Alberta to be a paediatric intensivist. “The stars aligned, so to speak, to have a position come up within the Paediatric Critical Care Unit and be able to come back home.”

Dr. Burgess is deeply passionate about medical education and enhancing paediatric critical care outreach throughout Southwestern Ontario. Available to more than 30 community hospitals, she delivers valuable virtual education and insightful consultations to teams.

Within Children’s, she is instrumental in running high impact simulation education for medical students, residents and staff in her area of care. Since she started, she has increased the frequency of sessions and revived the Children’s Hospital Mock Code Program. She also envisions developing a new paediatric critical care bedside ultrasound program and supporting staff well-being.

“Bedside ultrasound has become increasingly important in providing leading-edge care,” said Dr. Burgess. “I’m excited to work alongside Dr. Charisse Kwan and other health professionals to establish a paediatric point-of-care ultrasound simulation learning series to guide our trainees in building these valuable skills. I also want to introduce a critical incident stress management team to help mitigate trauma within our workforce.”
