Sandra Schmirler “Queen of Curling” Legacy Lives on with the Foundation’s Telethon

Affectionately called “Schmirler the Curler,” and “The Queen of Curling,” Sandra always found a way to win in many games, situations, and places. Even when Sandra became sick, her health care journey inspired the creation of a life changing foundation in her memory.

Founded in January 2001, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation helps create better days for vulnerable infants needing care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

“Our vision is to fund the purchase of life-saving equipment for NICUs so every baby in Canada born too soon, too small or too sick has the chance to grow up and become a champion, like Sandra Schmirler.” – Tanya Martin, Program and Financial Services Manager, Sandra Schmirler Foundation

Babies across Canada have benefitted from life-saving equipment the Foundation has funded – including our own Children’s Hospital!

“Before our stay in the NICU, I had no idea children could be born at 22, 23, 24 weeks… I never even thought that would be possible. Seeing your baby so tiny and struggling to fight is hard. But, 100 days later, after nurses who always checked in on us and a doctor who cared for our whole family, I know we would never be the same without Children’s.” – Jenna’s Mom

Children’s Health Foundation and Children’s Hospital have been honoured to have a community-minded leader, like the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, support the best possible start for vulnerable infants.  The much-needed equipment they have provided enables the NICU Team at Children’s Hospital to provide the best care possible.
