Families facing serious health issues at Children’s Hospital will receive enhanced guidance and support in their time of need – thanks to a generous donation.
Legate Personal Injury Lawyers made a gift of $300,000 to Children’s Health Foundation to expand the hours and services of the Paediatric Family Resource Centre.
The Paediatric Family Resource Centre exists to provide wraparound care for families throughout the health care journey of their children and is staffed by individuals who have lived experience of having a child in the hospital. Families turn to the centre when they need an ear to listen, help to connect to community services, access to technology or medical information, financial assistance, or other key supports.
“Hospital life doesn’t end once business hours are over. Families require the guidance, resources and emotional support offered at the centre beyond 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” says Scott Fortnum, President and CEO of Children’s Health Foundation. “Legate Personal Injury Lawyers has made it possible to provide the extra support that families so desperately need, by helping the Paediatric Family Resource Centre stay open later and on weekends.”
The centre typically supports up to 4,800 visits from families annually. Staff have already seen a 35% increase in the number of families benefitting from the centre as a result of the increase in hours. In addition to the hours, the centre has been able to improve the technology that is available for families.
“Thank you for allowing us to participate in this enormously important program,” said Barb Legate, Founding Partner at Legate Personal Injury Lawyers. “When we found out that the Paediatric Family Resource Centre was only open during office hours, we thought there’s a gap we need to fix. We (myself, Joni Dobson and Barbara A. MacFarlane) are all lawyers, but we are mothers first and foremost and want to do whatever we can to improve the lives of children.”
