Ensuring babies receive the best treatment with the arrival of a Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography Machine
A new standard of care is now available for fragile babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Children’s Hospital with the arrival of the new Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography (TNE) machine.
Using this state-of-the-art machine a specially-trained neonatologist can do an ultrasound of a sick baby’s heart right at the bedside, repeatedly, and see, in real time, the heart’s function to better assess and manage care.
Neonatologists use knowledge gleaned from the TNE Machine to make enhanced decisions regarding the best treatment for their patients.
This is so important because cardiac issues can have severe consequences, including affecting other organs for that child’s entire lifespan or even death.
Up until the purchase of the machine, neonatologists had limited use of an older echo machine from Cardiology when it was not in use. Now, the NICU has its own machine to be able to respond promptly in emergency situations and provide life-saving monitoring to any baby who requires it and determine the best treatment. It was imperative the NICU get its own machine as it cares for over 1000 babies a year.
Children’s Health Foundation donors provided funding to make the purchase of the TNE machine possible. The TNE is part of the 90% of equipment at Children’s Hospital that is funded by donors.
