Decoding DNA, Transforming Care for Children

Decades ago, sequencing a single human genome was a massive scientific undertaking – taking nearly a decade, hundreds of researchers, and millions of dollars.

Today, that same process can happen in just days.

For Dr. Richard Kim and his team, this leap forward isn’t just about speed – it’s about possibility.

At Children’s Hospital, LHSC new technology is opening doors to a deeper understanding of how children respond medications. Using next-generation sequencing platforms like PromethION, clinicians can now analyze a patient’s full genetic makeup faster and more comprehensively than ever before. Unlike older sequencing methods that required extensive preparation, PromethION can sequence DNA directly from a small sample — sometimes starting with just a single drop. Allowing clinicians to examine all of a child’s genetic differences, including rare or previously unknown variations that traditional testing may miss.

This matters because when it comes to children, there are still many unknowns.

“We know very little about how children metabolize medications,” explains Dr. Kim.

"Sometimes, children can’t fully express how they’re feeling — whether something is helping or causing harm.”

It’s shift toward precision medicine, where treatments are tailored to each child’s unique biology – an advancement driven by the generosity of Small Town Cancer Fighters.

“This equipment really wouldn’t have been possible without donors,” says Dr. Kim.

“Their (donors) generosity allows us to implement the latest technologies — not only advancing research but directly improving patient care.”

Every breakthrough, every answer uncovered, brings clinicians one step closer to ensuring that each child receives the right treatment at the right time.

Thanks to donors, what once took years can now change a child’s life in days.

Because of you, Hope Lives at Children’s.
