A big smile that lit up the room and a sturdy handshake at the door.
Ted Hunter was known for his positivity, commitment, and generosity. Both as a greeter at Kiwanis Bingo nights, but even more so as Skipper for the Skip-A-Meal fundraiser. Ted gave attendees a great laugh in his skipper costume and blew everyone away as he raised nearly $2,000 each year.
Always a passionate and dedicated supporter of each community he lived in, from Toronto and Vancouver to settling into Chatham, Ted volunteered at almost every Kiwanis bingo for years, bought the first seat in the Capitol Theatre’s “Buy a Seat” campaign and continually supported Chatham’s local food bank.
Ted Hunter was an amazingly jovial and generous presence in his 22 years with the Kiwanis Club. So much so that in 2018, when Ted needed to resign from Kiwanis due to ill health, they gladly provided him with a Hi Honorary Member Certificate.
Yet, even Ted’s closest friends and community partners were pleasantly surprised by just how generous he could be.
After his passing in August 2021, the Kiwanis Club received $100,000 from the estate of Ted Hunter, much to their surprise, to be donated to Children’s Health Foundation in London. With this gift, Ted continues improving the lives of vulnerable children in his community by directing his legacy gift to the PRECIPICE study at Children’s Health Research Institute (CHRI).
The landmark PRECIPICE research study, predictors of chronic pain and related conditions in children, will revolutionize paediatric acute pain management. Both identifying the factors that put children at risk for developing chronic pain and preventing children’s acute pain, like needle pokes, from becoming chronic pain.
Ted’s life-changing contributions, totaling $180,362, make a fundamental difference for Children’s Health Research Institute. His generosity helps ensure dedicated clinicians and researchers can not only provide the best possible care for sick children across Western Ontario today, but also conduct leading-edge research that will ensure the best care for them tomorrow.
